Registered students and those on Filing Fee must submit their thesis/dissertation with full committee approval or their comprehensive exam/capstone project during the Filing Period of their expected degree term.

  • The term's Filing Period includes the day after the previous term ends through the end of the term.

Registered and Filing Fee students share the same deadline to submit their thesis/dissertation with committee approval or their comprehensive exam/capstone project.

Filing Fee Application and Eligibility

Graduate students who have only their thesis/dissertation, comprehensive exam, or capstone project remaining may apply for a Filing Fee, paying a nominal fee instead of full tuition and registration in their final term.

The Filing Fee is half of the university's Student Services Fee. Effective Fall 2024, the Filing Fee is $209.

Graduate students may apply for and utilize Filing Fee if they:

  • advanced to candidacy at least one quarter prior to the term of Filing Fee use
  • were registered for the previous academic term
  • submit the Filing Fee application by the deadline of the term of intended Filing Fee use
  • no longer hold student employment at UCLA or receive financial support for the term of Filing Fee use

While on Filing Fee, students no longer hold student status and may not:

  • complete coursework
  • hold student employment at UCLA
  • receive university financial support (merit or need-based)
  • access campus resources and services for students (e.g., BOL services)

The online application form streamlines the process for submitting and reviewing Filing Fee applications and enables the submission of exception requests for late submissions.

Students should speak with their degree program student affairs officer for more information on Filing Fee eligibility and how to successfully submit a Filing Fee application.
