Personal Finance for PhDs: VPhD Webinar in November

As a Graduate Student at UCLA, you have access to the Versatile PhD platform, which provides many career and professional development resources. We encourage you to register for this upcoming webinar on preparing for post-PhD financial success with Dr. Emily Roberts and save the date for an in-person workshop on two different topics for January 29 th when we bring Dr. Roberts to UCLA this winter. The webinar will be about "Post-PhD Financial Success: How to Prepare for and Navigate Your Transition." It will discuss everything from moving expenses to higher taxes to possible new financial priorities like student loan repayment, retirement savings, and buying a home. Please register for the webinar here .

SEAOSC Webinar - Performing the USRC Seismic Rating using Nonlinear Response History Analyses and FEMA P-58 Assessment - April 11

WEBINAR: Performing the USRC Seismic Rating using Nonlinear Response History Analyses and FEMA P-58 Assessment Wednesday, April 11, 2018 12:00pm-1:00pm   REGISTER PRESENTATION: The United States Resilience Council (USRC) seismic rating can be used to communicate the results of an engineering-based evaluation to the relevant building stakeholders. Star ratings are provided for three separate dimensions: safety, damage, and recovery. The safety rating is described in terms of the potential for earthquake-related injuries, loss of life and the ability to evacuate the building following a seismic event. The damage rating is assigned based on the estimated cost of repairing earthquake-related damage and the time it takes the owner to regain use of the building for its primary intended function is used as the basis for ...

Design of Concrete Diaphragm and Collectors Webinar - Feb. 26

WEBINAR: Design of Concrete Diaphragm and Collectors - Based on Seismic Design Manual, Volume 3, Example 6 Monday, February 26, 2018 12:00pm-1:00pm   REGISTER PRESENTATION: Seismic Design Manual Volume 3, Example 6 "Design of Concrete Diaphragm and Collector" is a design example for a four-story concrete building with a large opening in the center of the floor diaphragm. Diaphragms are horizontal or sloped systems acting to transfer lateral forces to the vertical lateral-loadresisting system (LLRS). The purpose of the diaphragm is to (a) transfer inertial mass to the vertical LLRS, (b) provide restraint to gravity as well as the LLRS from buckling and (c) facilitate connection of various component of the vertical LLRS with appropriate strength and stiffness so that the building responds as intended in design. This example demonstrates a simplified approach to fin...
