Solar Decathlon

Solar Decathlon is a competition hosted by the US Department of Energy, where teams from different schools compete to build a sustainable, net-zero, solar-powered house that is fully functioning and habitable. More information can be found here: http://www.solardecathlon.gov/ We are interested in representing UCLA in the 2019 competition, however, we can't do it alone. We are reaching out to different departments to see if we can recruit more students and faculty to get involved with this project. If you have any experience with sustainable building or if this competition sounds interesting to you we hope you’ll consider joining in some capacity. Faculty can get involved in a number of ways, from being a design team advisor helping with specific engineering aspects of the project to being a general advisor helping us with more managerial issues. All faculty would be able to choose their own time commitments to the project. Thank you; if you’re interested in getting involved w...

C&EE 200 Seminar: Dr. David Jassby

Dr. David Jassby Assistant Professor, University of California Riverside Local Resilience in the Face of Drought: Coupling Physical, Chemical, and Biological Reactions to Address Emerging Challenges in Water Treatment Engineering Thursday, February 4, 2016 BH 4275 11 a.m. As California endures another year of drought, there is a growing emphasis on developing and maintaining local, reliable water resources for municipal, industrial and agricultural activities. In an effort to develop these supplies, highly contaminated water sources, such as seawater and wastewater, are increasingly viewed as viable sources of water. However, the treatment and recovery of water from these highly contaminated sources remains a serious challenge across multiple sectors and industries. While existing treatment technologies can produce the desired water quality, the costs in terms of energy, chemicals, physical footprint, and waste disposal are often unacceptably high. The goal of our resear...

CEE 200 Seminar: 2/3

Andrew Dinsick GeoPentech Key Issues in Ground Motion Characterization for Performance-Based Design Projects Tuesday, February 2 PAB 1434A 4:00 p.m. This presentation will provide a brief overview on the ground motion characterization process for performance-based design projects in areas with high seismic demand.  The general steps including evaluating the key seismic sources, running a PSHA, selecting seed time histories and spectral matching will be discussed in the context of an example project on the UCLA campus.  Two key issues that have been addressed for the on-going UCLA project include the implementation of a Conditional Mean Spectrum (CMS) approach and the evaluation of kinematic Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) effects. For the subject project, CMS have been developed for two spectral periods to capture the first mode and higher modes of the structure being analyzed.  The time histories were developed for free-field conditions and then modified ...

Eli Yablonovitch Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Department University of California, Berkeley, CA & UCLA Electrical Engineering Department Friday, January 29, 2016 10:30 am-12:00 pm 2101, Engineering V Refreshments will be served before the seminar Nippon Sheet Glass Lecture in Materials Science and Engineering Optoelectronics: Is there anything it cannot do; Can Opto-Electronics Provide the Motive Power for Future Vehicles? Abstract: A new scientific principle has produced record-breaking solar cells. The 28.8% single-junction solar effi-ciency record, by Alta Devices, was achieved by recognizing the importance of extracting luminescent emission. This is exemplified by the mantra: “A great solar cell also needs to be a great LED”. It was essential to remove the original sem-iconductor substrate, which absorbed luminescence, and to replace it with a high reflectivity mirror. The solar efficiency record crept up as the rear reflectivity behind the photovoltaic ...

Dr. Andrea Silverman Post-Doctoral Researcher, University of California, Berkeley Sunlight Disinfection of Waterborne Viruses: Modeling Inactivation Rates to Improve the Design of Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems Thursday, January 28, 2016 BH 4275 11 a.m. Natural wastewater treatment systems, including wastewater treatment ponds and constructed wetlands, are used globally for treatment of domestic sewage and polishing of wastewater treatment plant effluent. In removing and transforming nutrients, chemical contaminants and waterborne pathogens, these systems play an important role in protecting public and environmental health. Sunlight inactivation is the dominant process involved in disinfection of waterborne bacteria and viruses within natural treatment systems. Focusing on waterborne viruses (given that they are significant etiologies of disease and are generally more resistant to disinfection than other waterborne pathogens), the goals of this work were to better un...
