Design of Concrete Diaphragm and Collectors Webinar - Feb. 26

WEBINAR:
Design of Concrete Diaphragm and Collectors - Based on Seismic Design Manual, Volume 3, Example 6

Monday, February 26, 2018
12:00pm-1:00pm

PRESENTATION:
Seismic Design Manual Volume 3, Example 6 "Design of Concrete Diaphragm
and Collector" is a design example for a four-story concrete building with a
large opening in the center of the floor diaphragm. Diaphragms are horizontal
or sloped systems acting to transfer lateral forces to the vertical lateral-loadresisting
system (LLRS). The purpose of the diaphragm is to (a) transfer inertial
mass to the vertical LLRS, (b) provide restraint to gravity as well as the LLRS
from buckling and (c) facilitate connection of various component of the vertical
LLRS with appropriate strength and stiffness so that the building responds as
intended in design. This example demonstrates a simplified approach to
finding the demands on the diaphragm (using a rigid diaphragm assumption)
and collector based on the IBC 2015 and referenced standard ACI 318-14.
Design of diaphragm chords and collector and detailing of these elements is
also included in this example. The diaphragm demands obtained from a
simplified approach is compared with the demands obtained by modeling the
diaphragm as a semi-rigid element using shell elements. Conclusions bases on
the results will also be presented at the end.
PRESENTER:

Badri K. Prasad, P.E., S.E.
Project Executive, IMEG Inc.

Mr. Prasad has over 28 years of experience leading design
teams for the structural engineering of major new buildings,
including high rise structures, healthcare facilities, courts,
correctional facilities, airports, schools, and seismic retrofits.
His areas of expertise include the structural design of complex buildings of all types and materials, seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings, design execution, and project management. Mr. Prasad has expertise with mixed construction types and materials, and is experienced with performance based engineering. He is a registered Structural Engineer in California and also a registered Professional Engineer in Washington State. He has published and presented papers at several seminars on BRBF systems and Base-isolation systems. He is also one of the authors of two Design Guides for Concrete Diaphragm and Collectors, published by NCSEA and ICC.  Mr. Prasad works with IMEG Inc. He holds the title of Project Executive and manages the Walnut Creek Office in the Bay Area.
