Anticipated Announcement: Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program Application Cycle

 We have received word that the Department of Education expects to open the 2023 application cycle for the Fulbright-Hays DDRA in early February. Interested doctoral students should make contact with FFS as soon as possible, if they have not done so already, so we may include them on the internal application email list. Feel free to forward this information to applicable doctoral students or graduate advisors.

Since 2019, UCLA has been awarded 35 DDRA fellows.

The Fulbright-Hays DDRA Program, sponsored by the Department of Education, provides grants to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research abroad, in modern foreign languages and area studies, for periods of 6 to 12 months. Projects exclusive to Western Europe will not be considered. Eligibility is open to most fields including competitive preference points for projects with a thematic focus in the areas of STEM, computer science, public health, education, international development, political science, and economics. A modern foreign language must facilitate the project. The grant period is expected to run from January 2024 to March 2025 (students propose a project within that timeframe). Students do not need to be advanced to candidacy to apply; however, should a student be awarded, they must advance prior to activating the grant. The grant includes generous funding for legal dependents to travel with the fellow during the research period.

2023 APPLICATION

Students must apply through the UCLA Division of Graduate Education. Refer interested students to Ross Fenimore (contact below) as soon as possible so that they will be prepared for the upcoming application cycle.
