Evaluation of NCAH Environmental Engineer Position
What is needed for this position?
This position needs a person with strong math and chemistry skills. The person has to be able to calculate air emissions determinations, manure nutrient calculations, and do the math and chemistry needed to determine if wastes can be drain discharged to the sanitary sewer and continue to meet permit limits.
The person needs to have a basic understanding of environmental laws as they will be determining whether work being done at the Centers meets environmental regulatory requirements. This could be taught, but this experience (or some sort of regulatory/policy experience) would be a major benefit to ensuring the person knew the requirements of the job, and could perform the job functions beyond the skill set of math/chemistry.
The person needs to have a basic understanding of how to read engineering plans and specifications as they are required to review construction documents to ensure the facility is meeting environmental requirements for asbestos, stormwater, recycling, universal waste disposal, and environmental permit requirements in the contract documents before the project is put out for bid. Similarly, this could be taught, but lack of this experience would limit the work the candidate could perform until the experience was acquired.
A non-engineer will have difficulty meeting the needs of the position. Similarly, an engineer without an interest in the environment (i.e. doing the work needed) would very likely be dissatisfied with the position.
The person needs to be able to walk to where spills occur and drive for sampling events.
