Talk of Interest - Judea Pearl - May 15
At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, our own Judea Pearl will be giving a
talk at the Young Research Library as part of the UCLA Library Writer Series.
Judea has a new book, intended for a general audience: “The Book of
Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect.” This is a special occasion to
hear about an emerging line of research
from one of our most distinguished faculty members.
As
engineers and computer scientists, we’re familiar with writing research
papers, conference proceedings and even textbooks in our specific
fields. Much rarer is it to step beyond
those familiar boundaries and write for a broad audience. But that’s
what Judea has done here – connecting the science of causality with
everyday lives and explaining how experts in disparate fields can start
to use these insights.
For those of you not familiar with
Judea,
he is one of the world’s most influential figures in computer science,
in particular in artificial intelligence, dating back to when he joined
UCLA in 1970. Judea is a Turing Award recipient
and member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy
of Sciences.
I
encourage you to attend what is sure to be a fascinating discussion
with one of our own intellectual titans. This event is open to all, so
please let your friends and colleagues
from other parts of campus know as well.
