Fall 2017 TA Positions

The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is seeking applications for Teaching Assistant/Associate/Fellows for Fall 2017 for the following three courses:

1) Environment 180A - Environmental Science Practicum
The ENV 180 series is the year-long capstone experience for seniors in the Environmental Science major. For Environment 180A in the Fall, the TA is responsible for teaching and grading two lab sections covering research techniques in environmental science, primarily an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), GPS and other quantitative techniques. Topics include basic data analysis, cartography, spatial data creation, field based data acquisition, digitizing and change analysis. TAs attend relevant class lectures during the quarter.

Expertise and comfort teaching ArcGIS is essential, familiarity with statistics software R is preferred.

TA position is for a 50% appointment and includes fees for Fall quarter.

To Apply for ENV 180A:
Please send letter of interest and CV to Noah Garrison  (ngarrison@ioes.ucla.edu).
Open until filled, review of candidates will start in May.

2) Environment 166 - Leadership in Water Management
This course examines water quality and water supply issues, including interactions between scientific, technological, management, and policy issues. Invited experts, scholars, and practitioners discuss relevant issues such as pollution, climate change, and water infrastructure. Course emphasizes solutions involving integrated water supply and wastewater systems. Leadership development occurs through writing instruction and negotiations and media training.

TA attends lectures, runs two discussion sections and assist with grading. TA should be independent and articulate – the discussion sections will largely be the TAs to design and run.  The TA will be responsible for logistical support and coordination for a variety of guest speakers and two Saturday field trips. A major component of the class are the team projects, so project management experience of other students would be helpful.
Must have experience in the water quality and/or water supply arena. Although the focus will be on California and US water issues, experience in international water issues is welcome too. Experienced TAs preferred.

TA position is for a 50% appointment and includes fees for Fall quarter.

3) Environment M10 - Introduction to Environmental Science
This lower division course is an introduction to environmental science as a discipline and as a way of thinking. Course examines critical environmental issues at local and global scales and covers the fundamentals of physical, chemical, and biological processes important to environmental science. Laboratory exercises augment lectures. TAs attend lectures, assist with grading, and run two weekly lab/discussion sections.

Expertise in a related physical or natural science field is required, familiarity with earth science or atmospheric science and previous TA experience is preferred.
