Seeking Civil/Structural Engineers in CI7
The U.S. Navy is looking to hire talented civil/structural engineers to work in the field of explosives safety, specifically for protective construction design to resist explosion effects. An advanced understanding of structural dynamics and structural engineering theory is required, and it is highly beneficial to have in-depth knowledge of the physical theory behind the effects and consequences of explosives. The applicant will apply advanced scientific methods to applied research and exploratory or advanced development, developing new structural engineering principles, methods and systems, emphasizing the economical life-cycle performance of explosion resistant structures. Innovative solutions are devised that extend structural service life; enhance criteria, standards, methods, and materials; or create new facility criteria, components, subsystems, and systems.
The Research Structural Engineer position shall perform explosives safety structural assessments, analyses, and develop design bases in accordance with applicable protective construction policy and criteria documents. The position directs and performs creation of designs, research plans, analytical studies and physical test methodologies for structural systems. The position directs literature surveys and theoretical analyses to determine the need and type of testing and evaluation efforts required for new technologies. Additionally, structural analysis using advanced numerical methods in support of explosives safety, structural assessments, and related research efforts shall be conducted. Furthermore, the position executes the reduction and analysis of test data and computational results to develop solutions to unusual problems which will be documented in final reports with specific recommendations for action by clients. Finally, the position may oversee the preparation of specifications and statements of work, the selection of the performing contractor, and the monitoring their performance.
The position is within the Explosion Effects and Consequences (EE&C) Division (Code: CI7) at the Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) located in Port Hueneme, CA at Naval Base Port Hueneme. The EE&C Division focuses on development and maintenance of structural systems to support ammunition and explosives operations at Naval ordnance handling and storage facilities. Structures either directly or indirectly supporting explosives operations require consideration of the blast effects generated by an accidental explosion, and may require blast hardening integrated into the design of the system. These projects and programs related to explosion effects require structural mechanics and structural engineering technology, including experimental and theoretical analysis and evaluation of structural systems, subsystems, assemblies and components to meet the requirements and mission of the Naval Shore Establishment and other DoD organizations.
The NAVFAC EXWC team offers innovative, exciting and meaningful work linking military and civilian talents to achieve our mission and safeguard our freedoms. The Department of the Navy provides competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits, and extensive professional development and training. The comprehensive benefits package includes, in part, paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, a 401K-type retirement plan, and an Employee Assistance Program. Come to the crown jewel of California's Central Coast and enjoy the rolling hills to sweeping ocean views. Ventura County is located approximately 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. The near perfect Mediterranean climate with an average annual temperature of 74.2 degrees and a wonderful quality of life are a few of the reasons many of the 830,000 residents call Ventura County "home". The County of Ventura offers numerous year-round activities ranging from walking on the beach to enjoying a concert in a park, sailing to the Channel Islands or hiking in the Los Padres National Forest. Ventura County is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, the San Buenaventura Mission, art galleries, and a state-of-the-art Civic Arts Plaza. With its mild climate, geographical diversity including beaches and pristine and rugged wilderness, year-round recreational and cultural opportunities and proximity to major metropolitan amenities, Ventura County is a great place to live and work!
