Luskin Endowment Inaugural Symposium: Call for Abstracts

Call for Abstracts – Poster Session – “Earth Now: Earth 2050”
UCLA College Luskin Endowment Inaugural Symposium – October 18-20, 2016
Abstracts may be submitted until 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 7, 2016.

The world needs solutions to the environmental challenges it faces — not more hand-wringing.
To advance those solutions, the inaugural symposium of UCLA’s new Luskin Conference Center
will feature a poster presentation session on October 19 focused on the symposium’s theme
— a new environmentalism. This brand of environmentalism is a break with the past: it is
optimistic, tech- and information-savvy, oriented to action in the public good, open to
collaboration with non-traditional partners such as corporations, and combines novel science
with new narratives about the future of nature and humankind.

For this poster session, the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES), Luskin
Center for Innovation, Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, Laboratory for
Environmental Narratives (LENS), and Sustainable LA Grand Challenge invite abstracts from
both undergraduates and graduate students that cover conceptual, qualitative, or quantitative
research on environmental topics across the physical sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

About the Symposium: “Earth Now: Earth 2050” will celebrate UCLA’s diverse work in the
environmental arena; engage the greater public; highlight UCLA’s world-class environmental
programs and intellectual capital; facilitate interaction with Los Angeles area high school
students and UCLA undergraduate and graduate students; and bring in external speakers to
inspire and transcend. The event will highlight the new UCLA Luskin Conference Center in all
of its facets – as well as honor the generosity of Meyer and Renee Luskin.

About the Poster Presentation Session: This joint undergraduate and graduate student poster
presentation session will showcase the diverse and multi-disciplinary, solutions-based research
conducted on environmental issues at UCLA, as well as work that promotes the theme of “Earth
Now: Earth 2050.”

Submissions across a broad range of environmental and related topics and perspectives are
encouraged. Abstracts should be limited to no more than 300 words of text and should include
the following four components:
• What is the problem or issue the research addresses?
• What methods or approaches were used to make progress on the problem?
• What are the principal results or findings?
• What are the implications of your findings?

Abstracts or questions regarding submission guidelines may be submitted by email to
ngarrison@ioes.ucla.edu by the deadline of 5:00 PM on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. All
submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the symposium committee, and presenters will be
informed of their selection by September 12, 2016.
