Structural Engineering Graduate Students Wanted

 EWB-USA

Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) and would like to recruit structural engineering graduate students with design experience to a schoolhouse project in Nicaragua.

About EWB-USA
EWB-USA is a nonprofit humanitarian organization established to support community-driven development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences that enrich global perspectives and create responsible leaders.

The Project
Our project is currently in the design phase of a 1-story schoolhouse structure (a hybrid design using concrete masonry units and wooden frame) and is in great need of graduate-level students to help with the design calculations that need to be approved by EWB-USA before implementation of the project can begin. Our project is partnered with the engineering firm, Arup. The design team is mentored by two Arup building engineers and we have design meetings in the Arup LA office.

Benefits
Being on this design team is a unique opportunity to work on a small-scale project, learn about community development, learn about the great work EWB-USA does, and gain professional experience working with Arup. The time commitment required of design team members will be demanding because we want students who are committed to the project and to the community we are designing and implementing the schoolhouse for.

How to get involved
For those students interested in traveling to Nicaragua, being involved in the project is a requirement. If anyone is interested and would like to get involved, please contact Ann Jiras at anncjiras@ucla.edu. You can read more about our project at our website here: https://sites.google.com/site/ewbucla/current-projects/nicaragua-project-s-e-d-sanitation-education-and-development. We also have general EWB-UCLA club meetings every Tuesday in ENG IV 38-138 at 6:15pm.
