Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association International Scholarship - Application due by May 21

This is the call for the 2018-19 Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association International Scholarships. There will be two awardees from UCLA, each getting a stipend of $2,000.   The application and faculty recommendation form are attached.   Selection criteria: a.      The award is intended for international students completing their graduate work.  At UCLA, preference will be given to students formally advanced to doctoral candidacy at the time of application and who plan to return to their home country upon completion of the degree.  Students are only eligible for one award (i.e., previous recipients cannot apply again).  b.     Awardees are expected to be returning to their home countries, preferably just after completing the degree. However, postdoctoral study has always been an area where some latitude has been permitted, especially where it is expected as “part of the degree” and/or is unobtainable in...

Interest-free loans for students

Image
JFLA [Jewish Free Loan Association]  is a not-for-profit that has been around for a very long time (reputable entity) and works with students irrespective of their religion to offer interest free loans for up to $10,000 that are disbursed directly to the student (so do not count as a financial aid resource). A flyer with their standard loan information is attached. Typically, these loans are made to students who have a Social Security Number but they also support the undocumented community through the Karsh Family Social Service Center located in Koreatown. They have a representative Veronica available every Monday from 9-11 that students can reach out to at 323-422-4990. This may be a good resource for our undocumented graduate students or graduate students, in general,  who have maxed out their resources from UCLA. Please take a look at the information below.

Talk of Interest - Judea Pearl - May 15

At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, our own Judea Pearl will be giving a talk at the Young Research Library as part of the UCLA Library Writer Series . Judea has a new book, intended for a general audience: “The Book of Why: The New Science of Cause and Effect.” This is a special occasion to hear about an emerging line of research from one of our most distinguished faculty members. As engineers and computer scientists, we’re familiar with writing research papers, conference proceedings and even textbooks in our specific fields. Much rarer is it to step beyond those familiar boundaries and write for a broad audience. But that’s what Judea has done here – connecting the science of causality with everyday lives and explaining how experts in disparate fields can start to use these insights. For those of you not familiar with Judea , he is one of the world’s most influential figures in computer science, in particular in artificial intelligence, dating back to when he joined ...
