Latinx in the Mathematical Sciences Conference 2018

About: On March 8-10, 2018, the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) will host a conference showcasing the achievements of Latinx in the mathematical sciences. The goal of the conference is to encourage Latinx to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, to promote the advancement of Latinx currently in the discipline, to showcase research being conducted by Latinx at the forefront of their fields, and, finally, to build a community around shared academic interests. The conference is sponsored by the Mathematical Sciences Institutes Diversity Initiative and will be held on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, CA. You can read more about this conference at: http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/lat2018 Application: The application is for out-of-town students and recent PhDs who wish to request IPAM support for housing and/or travel, as well as those who want to present a poster at the conference. Please answer every question on the application form, and submit all ...

GSR Support

The UCLA Library is coordinating a series of  free  workshops designed to meet the needs of advanced researchers across the campus. During Winter Quarter we will offer workshops on topics such as: Introduction to R, Research Data Management, GIS, Presentation Software, etc.  In addition, as part of this series, some graduate students have offered to present research projects that utilize tools and methods they have found useful.   We are asking for your help in suggesting topics for workshops that you would make plans to attend. UCLA librarians are very much interested in ways the library can build and sustain communities of practice around research tools, methods and workflows. We designed this quick (5 minute)  survey  to gather your feedback.  The information you provide will help guide our choices of workshop topics and timing. If you have any questions, you may contact me: zoe@l...

CEE 200 Sec 2 Seminar: Mikael Nilsson - Nov. 30

While other countries are expanding their nuclear power plant fleet we appear to be shrinking ours. With the low price of fossil fuels, especially natural gas, nuclear power plants might not be competitive if the sole product is electricity. With advanced technology, available to us today there are certain improvements that can be made to make nuclear power more competitive. Furthermore, past studies have shown that there is an untapped potential for high value products that can be produced using nuclear power plants. In this talk I will discuss advances in nuclear power and nuclea...
